Vasectomy

Vasectomy is a simple, safe and effective procedure for men who do not wish to have more children. A vasectomy prevents pregnancy better than any other form of birth control, aside from abstinence.

We perform this surgery in-office, and you should be in and out within an hour. You will be able to drive yourself home but are welcome to bring a loved one with you if you prefer.

Please be sure to read our pre and post-op information below.

Preparing For Your Vasectomy

Vasectomy is a simple, safe and effective procedure for men who do not wish to have more children. A vasectomy prevents pregnancy better than any other form of birth control, aside from abstinence.

We perform this surgery in-office at our Jasper OB/GYN location. The procedure itself only takes about 20 minutes, and the entire process should take less than an hour. You will be able to drive yourself home but are welcome to bring a loved one with you if you prefer.

2 Weeks Before Procedure:

  • Bring your ID and insurance card(s) to our Jasper OB/GYN location for them to make copies. You may also fax front and back copies to 812-482-3993. They will take care of all insurance and billing. You will be informed of any copays and deductibles, and if owed, they are due upfront in the form of cash or check. We do not accept credit or debit cards. Pre-payment plans may be arranged.

1 Week Before Procedure:

  • Remove hair from the scrotum.
  • Avoid aspirin or any blood thinning medications 7 days prior to procedure.

Day of Procedure:

  • Meet at your scheduled time at the Jasper OB/GYN office. Be sure to wear supportive underwear.
  • We will discuss your situation and make sure you are a good candidate for the procedure.
  • You will have a brief physical exam, followed by a discussion of the risks, benefits and what to expect afterward.
  • You will be given Dr. Gilley’s personal cell number. Do not hesitate to call if you have questions or concerns.
  • You will receive the necessary paperwork to provide a post op semen analysis.

Post Procedure

The most important thing to know is that you are not sterile immediately after this procedure. You can still conceive a child immediately afterward. You must use appropriate contraception until you provide a semen analysis showing no sperm.

  • Go home and take it easy for 24 hours – lie down or prop up in a recliner.
  • Ice intermittently to reduce swelling.
  • Tylenol and ibuprofen are fine to use as pain relievers. Avoid aspirin and any blood thinning medications to reduce the risk of bleeding.
  • Light activity only for the first two days.
  • Avoid strenuous activity for 1 week. The most common call we get is 5 days post-procedure when a patient has overexerted himself and experiences pain. There is usually nothing wrong, and if the exertion can be avoided, the pain will be avoided as well.

Post Vasectomy Semen Analysis.

This needs to be completed about two months after the procedure. You may give your sample at any of these locations:

  • Daviess Community Hospital in Washington, IN. (dchosp.org) Phone: 812-254-2760. They now have an online patient portal and the results are available there.
  • Boston IVF clinic at The Women’s Hospital at Deaconess Gateway in Evansville, IN. (bostonivfindiana.com)  Phone: 812-842-4530. By appointment only.

Once you provide your specimen, you need to contact Dr. Gilley to obtain the results. Only after we have a negative semen analysis can you use this as your only form of contraception.
